“Just-A-Chance” of Holland Michigan has been created for Families & Youth in the Holland area.
Just-A-Chance envisions a stronger, more optimistic, and more cohesive Holland community. Just-A-Chance seeks to foster confidence, self-reliance, and community awareness and participation among our youth. “It is better to teach a man how to fish than it is to give him a fish every day.”
The mission of Just-A-Chance is to develop and offer a range of programs which assist the disadvantaged youth within our community. These programs rely upon a combination of one-on-one mentoring, youth recreational activities, community services and volunteering, and hands-on exposure to practical life skills.
“Teach a man to fish”…
Per the ancient proverb, a hand up is much more effective than a hand out. Many of our youth do not have the benefit of an environment where they can gain practical life skills.
The program spans basic tool usage to facing the realities things that “go bump in the night.” Those “bumps” includes toilets that will not flush, faucets and plumbing that leak, a faulty appliance, a light fixture that will not light, a lawnmower or car that will not run, and so many other household items.
Just-A-Chance (JAC) strives to offer programs to assist youth and families within our community. These programs incorporate one-on-one mentoring, youth recreational activities (fishing, golfing, bowling, nature discovery, etc). Through these activities, youth can build better self-image and a positive attitude.
JAC encourages involvement in local events that provide multiple opportunities to build character and a sense of civic responsibility through involvement. Beyond this, JAC promotes individual volunteerism to neighbors and friends, improving neighborhood interaction.
How you can help
JAC is continuing to move forward…… We have an office, a place to call “home”. Now we could use the help of people in the community. We are seeking individuals willing to take the responsibility of becoming a board or committee member to assist with program development and general business. Individuals with experience in grant-writing, business and plan development, an interest in any of our current programs, or helping to develop our new and future programs are welcome to contact us to discuss opportunities that might be a good fit.
In addition, if you know of any local youth who would be interested in participating in one of our programs or have a connection that may work to benefit the young people in the local Holland area, please also contact us to discuss those opportunities.
Just-A-Chance was the idea of Mr. Ron Chavez, who started a personal independent outreach while being an active volunteer in the Holland area with many programs and causes. Instead of basing activities inside “four walls”, JAC evolved its outreach to include many outdoor activities. His personal outreach was through his own efforts and time using funding from his own pocket and a few donations from the community. It was not until he was approached by another individual who helped him move it forward to a registered nonprofit in 2015.
Our lives are designed to be outdoors, we are human animals, and our lives need to be lead in the great outdoors to grow and explore with the natural energies and beauty of nature God has created for man. Youth not given a chance to improve their current situation may direct energies to negative or misguided activities. Given a chance, through mentorship, these same youth can become our future young leaders.
Mr. Chavez sought to address these issues by developing a program to meet the real needs and desires of youth. Working with local leaders to develop opportunities, Mr. Chavez sought an opportunity to give back to the community.
Our logo is derived from a rockabilly band called “The Stray Cats.” A stray cat is much like our youth, not knowing where life leads them and misunderstood along their way. As we know, a stray cat can be a cool cat that has much love to share, if given a chance in life with proper leadership and training. This is the goal of Just-A-Chance, to provide the chance for each youth and their families to grow and develop into strong community members.
